The Business

Helping people make better decisions about the food they eat.

FoodFacts was a nutrition technology company focused on helping consumers make healthier food choices while giving food manufacturers a platform for managing accurate product information and nutrition intelligence.

The opportunity was much larger than rebuilding a website. FoodFacts needed a technology foundation capable of supporting a growing product database, increasingly complex nutrition information, operational workflows, manufacturers and consumer-facing experiences.

The Challenge

The existing technology couldn't support where the business needed to go.

Multiple development firms had attempted to solve the problem, but FoodFacts still lacked a scalable technology foundation.

Expensive Infrastructure

Proprietary technology created unnecessary operating costs and limited flexibility.

Scaling Product Data

A rapidly growing product database required a fundamentally more scalable architecture.

Publishing Complexity

Product information needed to move efficiently through review, management and publishing workflows.

Long-Term Maintainability

The business needed a foundation that could continue evolving rather than another short-term technical fix.

My Role

More than software development.

I worked directly with the founder to understand the business, rethink the technology strategy and turn those decisions into a working product platform.

01

Product Strategy

Balanced business requirements, operating costs, scalability and long-term product goals.

02

Architecture

Designed the technical foundation and data architecture supporting the product ecosystem.

03

Engineering

Led development across the database, APIs, CMS, search, integrations and public platform.

04

Business Partnership

Worked directly with leadership to ensure technical decisions supported the company's business goals.

The Solution

Rebuild the foundation, not just the interface.

I redesigned FoodFacts around a scalable open-source architecture capable of supporting the entire product lifecycle.

Platform Thinking

One foundation. Multiple products and workflows.

Instead of treating the website, product database, publishing tools and integrations as independent projects, they became parts of a larger product ecosystem.

Scaling the Product

From approximately 70,000 products to more than 1 million.

Growth at that scale required more than additional server capacity. The ingestion, review, publishing and operational processes surrounding the data all needed to scale with it.

Business Impact

Technology became an enabler of growth instead of a constraint.

50%+

Lower Operating Costs

Replacing expensive proprietary systems with a scalable open-source architecture reduced operating costs by more than half.

1M+

Products at Scale

The new foundation supported growth from approximately 70,000 products to more than one million.

Faster Product Publishing

End-to-end data review and publishing workflows accelerated product updates while improving operational efficiency.

A Foundation for Long-Term Growth

FoodFacts gained a product ecosystem capable of evolving alongside the business rather than another temporary technology solution.

What This Project Demonstrates

The most important architecture decisions start with understanding the business.

FoodFacts wasn't simply a software rebuild. It required understanding why previous approaches had failed, where the business needed to go and what technical foundation could support that future.

My role crossed product strategy, architecture, engineering and business leadership. The result was not just new technology, but a platform that became the operational backbone of the company.

“
Joe exceeded every expectation I had and, with minimal documentation, was able to completely restructure and take our database to a new platform, as well as an entirely new front end. From there we were able to build a new website, mobile application, and API.
